April 23-24, 2010 --International Conference -- Exploring Alternative Foods for World Hunger: The Potential of Edible Insects (download a flyer)

Did you know that almost 80 percent of the world's population includes insects in their diets? More than 1400 species of insects are edible. Insects are a valuable source of critically needed protein and micro-nutrients. What are the pros and cons of promoting insects as a solution for world hunger? Why does the Western attitude toward entomaophagy matter? Join us in this conference at SIFAT's 176-acre international training campus to learn more from experts around the world.

Activities include:

  • Trapping and identifying local forest insects
  • Preparing other insects for consumption
  • Making gourmet recipes for Saturday night dinner
  • Celebrating at the Bug Banquet (non-bug food available)
  • Experiencing the Global Village and simulated slum
  • Taking a Tech Tour to see simple technologies that can help the hungry

May 16-29, 2010 -- Field Training in World Hunger and Malnutrition: Practical Skills to Make a Difference (download a flyer)

Do you want to learn practical skills to address hunger and malnutrition in the developing world?  Come join us at SIFAT's 176-acre international training campus for two weeks (May 16- May 29) of intensive hands-on learning that will give you a tool-kit to address basic human needs.

At the same time you learn practical skills, your understanding of world hunger and community development issues will deepen through participatory activities. Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Learn roof-top gardening
  • Build a simple solar cooker
  • Make leaf concentrate to treat malnourished children
  • Learn some simple technologies for clean water and sanitation
  • Build fuel-efficient cookstoves
  • Learn to preserve foods and "refrigerate" without electricity

SIFAT is partnering with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Sparkman Center for Global Health to offer periodic seminars/workshops combining the best in academic research with appropriate technologies in a community development context to address basic human needs essential to good health globally.

SIFAT is partnering with the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Sparkman Center for Global Health to offer this course:

Field Study in World Hunger and Malnutrition: Practical Skills to Make a Difference. Join us on SIFAT's campus in Lineville, Ala., in an intensive 10-day field training in food and nutrition: May 16-29, 2010.

Seminars usually last one hour at UAB, usually at noon at the School of Public Health. Workshops at SIFAT are longer with hands-on practical components. For a sample curriculum, see information on previous offerings held both at UAB and at the SIFAT Campus:

Team Training
Training is offered for team members and team leaders participating in SIFAT's Short-term Mission (STM) program to Ecuador, Bolivia, Uganda and Zambia.
