FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Learn & Serve

Learn and Serve (L&S) is a mission experience for youth and their leaders held each summer on the Servants in Faith and Technology (SIFAT)'s campus in Lineville, Ala. SIFAT provides L&S to encourage students in developing a heart for missions and an awareness of other cultures, especially those in the Third World. We strive to expose youth to global issues, have them experience the reality of daily life in the Third World, equip them with tools to use in the mission field and empower them to act using their God-given talents.

Click for the Learn and Serve site, including registration info and schedules.

The L&S experience highlights an awareness to global hunger, Christian persecution, Third World daily life and the use of appropriate technologies through the Global Village Experience.

1. What are the physical expectations of participants?

Students and chaperones should be able to walk more than one mile with ease. Some activities may require small amounts of running. Service projects may involve lifting objects and manual labor. If someone in the group has a disability or impediment, please let the L&S staff know in advance and we will work with you to make accommodations.

2.  Is spending money needed?
Students will have the opportunity to make purchases in The SIFAT Village Store. In addition to snacks, the store has L&S items, imported merchandise from Bolivia and Ecuador and other interesting items.

3. What is the ratio of youth to counselors?
Because small groups facilitate the best learning environment, we strive to have no more than 15 students per counselor.

4. What is the lodging at L&S like?
Both students and chaperones are housed in the Lodge, International House or Duplex during the week, except when staying in the Global Village.
The Lodge includes a girls' dorm room and a boys' dorm room. The large rooms each house about 20 students and have attached community bathrooms. Upstairs in the Lodge are four smaller rooms that house six to eight people. Each smaller room has its own bathroom. Downstairs in the Lodge is a full kitchen and a large community living area.
The International House has a full kitchen, dining room and living room. Four rooms branch off of the community area. The International House can accomodate about 30 people total.
The Duplex offers two separate sides. Each side has a full kitchen, living room and large bathroom upstairs. Downstairs, two dormitory-style rooms house bunk beds. The Duplex can accomodate about 24 people total.

5. What do we need to bring?

7. How much is L&S?
            Registration is $285 per participant.

8. When do I have to pay?
Because we understand that fundraisers cannot always happen at the same time, we've broken payments into three convenient steps:

  1. Deposit: A $75 per person, non-refundable deposit is required to reserve spaces for a Learn & Serve week. The deposit goes toward your balance due.
  2. First Payment: 50% of the group balance, less the deposit, will be due on April 1.
  3. Second Payment: The remaining balance will be due 14 days prior to the scheduled date.

Registration fees are in U.S. dollars and can be paid by check, credit card or money order. Registration fees less deposits are refundable when canceled at least 30 days before the start of your registered week.

8. What do the registration fees cover?

  • Lodging
  • All Meals
  • Programming materials and supplies
  • Awesome T-shirt
  • Guidebooks (devotional material)
  • Highly trained camp staff

9. What happens if the week I want is full?
All weeks are filled on a first-come, first-served basisi, so it helps to register early. If you register for a week that's full, we'll give you the option of being on a waiting list for your first choice, or registering for your second choice.

10. What if I need to cancel individuals - or my entire group?
If you wish to cancel your group or reduce the number of participants, contact our L&S staff at 256.396.2015. When canceling a participant, the deposit will be forfeited. Forfeited deposits cannot be transferred to an account balance or to another group. However, forfeited deposits can be used to add a enw participant to your group.

Registration amounts paid (less deposit amounts) are refundable when SIFAT is notified at least 60 days before the start of your week. The entire camp fee will be forfeited for cancellations less than 60 days from the start of your week.

11. Can I add people later?
Absolutely--provided your week has not been filled to capacity.
