ONGOING PROJECTS IN THE PHILIPPINES
On March 10, 2003, SIFAT Philippines celebrated six years of existence. Led by SIFAT graduate Norma Manuel, this dynamic group has held numerous one- and two-week seminars on sustainable agriculture, micro enterprise, clean water and sanitation, primary health care, program planning and proposal writing, and Christian discipleship. In April and May of 2000 the first SIFAT practicum was held in Asia, and regular practicums have been held since.
The first training session was held on the Island of Mindoro among the Mungyan people. This hunter-gatherer tribe is in danger of being wiped out through tuberculosis and other health problems as well as the shrinking of their lands and resources. SIFAT Philippines founded the only school for this group, with 67 children in attendance. In partnership with the Mungyans, SIFAT established a church, primary health care, an aquatic project, production of rice, and small animal husbandry. Ten micro enterprises have begun with funding from grants written by their graduates.
SIFAT Philippines feels called to take the integrated Gospel to all of Asia, and has already branched out into service in Cambodia and Thailand.
